I tried to teach my child with words; they passed him by often unheard.
Despairingly, I turned aside; “How shall I teach this child,” I cried.
Into my hand he put the key, “Come,” he said, “Play with me.”

My daughter saw a package of figures that demonstrated the life cycle of the frog and had to have it (she even counted out her pennies). We purchased them from Micheal's but you can order them <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Safari-Life-Cycle-Frog-Figure/dp/B009435MXO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369979328&sr=8-1&keywords=frog+life+cycle">here</a> on amazon. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We love all of our Safari Toob figures but these are our current favorite. She really likes that she can pretend she is taking care of an egg that slowly matures into a full grown frog. She also enjoys that she can pretend to be the mommy frog that has to take care of a big kid tadpole, 2 little kid tadpoles, and baby eggs.</div>

We got some books about frogs from the library. I set up the sink for water play. She played while I read the books. Sometimes, she acted out what I read in the book incorporating the new things she was learning about frogs.</div>

Earlier in the week we had tried out two different kinds of "dough". Check out the posts at <a href="http://learningatplay.blogspot.com/2013/06/dish-soap-dough.html">Soap Dough</a> and <a href="http://learningatplay.blogspot.com/2013/06/baby-oil-dirt.html">Baby Oil Dirt</a>. My daughter decided that we needed to try mixing them together. We took a few scoops of each and mixed them together in a new bin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAVAjCsXfJLWROsCgH4VzpvAiOIqMHPltAp7NK4KMAJEKclDewF7VM-RMUAvc78R2Merv9iqwnE5Ptai8iD9UURGfqJ1bn6tdNKw3G354PNJrCq5XwNWVRBU8ICKl9e_8Dgzg5s4pLgUc/s1600/making+egg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAVAjCsXfJLWROsCgH4VzpvAiOIqMHPltAp7NK4KMAJEKclDewF7VM-RMUAvc78R2Merv9iqwnE5Ptai8iD9UURGfqJ1bn6tdNKw3G354PNJrCq5XwNWVRBU8ICKl9e_8Dgzg5s4pLgUc/s320/making+egg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once mixed together the dough was a little easier to mold.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgicX1csa6ySNZUbQ4YcozkU-NrRyecgaSYlGu9inncvHAZapCp2yKi1xVMkOIFFQrq6o0pFiClcOCXbJfomYshDQNjFa0-gdIG48nvTZAdaJG9fNA-C9pKCnr8Kc6iQvw8wRG12ojjAIc/s1600/egg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgicX1csa6ySNZUbQ4YcozkU-NrRyecgaSYlGu9inncvHAZapCp2yKi1xVMkOIFFQrq6o0pFiClcOCXbJfomYshDQNjFa0-gdIG48nvTZAdaJG9fNA-C9pKCnr8Kc6iQvw8wRG12ojjAIc/s320/egg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we discovered we could get the dough to make an egg shape she ran and got her insects. She had me hide one of her insects in an egg.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2dgS0CBFhICBd303QraCgukh6u3nLobaKGWouVn_cUbxVCYsjhCh2h-3v775OlbvzEVLjTJsvrLrDRPBonDUTmzUhTIqNHunCDrMks64hu00Zfa2ENIb0kKrcuomH0XtnR6ZMZJekteA/s1600/cracking+egg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2dgS0CBFhICBd303QraCgukh6u3nLobaKGWouVn_cUbxVCYsjhCh2h-3v775OlbvzEVLjTJsvrLrDRPBonDUTmzUhTIqNHunCDrMks64hu00Zfa2ENIb0kKrcuomH0XtnR6ZMZJekteA/s320/cracking+egg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She would slowly break the egg apart, like the insect was hatching, as she guessed which one it was.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBjz-Fx76OM5CsWPzkgxz0hm6vaH0hW17Hx1rm2amBRkpt1dvqXOx6yUA9NSk65eA9ukY8R0x0z4ztzD0kw3_QOhwF5OVDPY_Fr6J4Anwr7EkYG4YgO5ryI322BQMuGwGRjJR5hhWr2t8/s1600/caterpillar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBjz-Fx76OM5CsWPzkgxz0hm6vaH0hW17Hx1rm2amBRkpt1dvqXOx6yUA9NSk65eA9ukY8R0x0z4ztzD0kw3_QOhwF5OVDPY_Fr6J4Anwr7EkYG4YgO5ryI322BQMuGwGRjJR5hhWr2t8/s320/caterpillar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When she found the caterpillar she quickly replaced it with the butterfly.</div>

I wanted to introduce a new kind of "dirt" to our insect sensory bin so I started fiddling around with stuff I had on hand. Here is our new favorite dirt recipe- 2 cups cornstarch, 1 cup Cocoa, about 1/4 cup baby oil ( I didn't really measure just kept adding as I stirred to get the desired consistency).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1QWhauJYmAByWcZPwHfIRca6HodJj1YmxYgAFkPq3dj2pG-fC-QSVsm0vWkIpqE-RVSo4nYV0v3bTh6G5GhdUgWV1TbmiAKpneUujHwDpXmHFusv3hb2uczRCHczeU2g1fMyud2dNCbc/s1600/insects.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1QWhauJYmAByWcZPwHfIRca6HodJj1YmxYgAFkPq3dj2pG-fC-QSVsm0vWkIpqE-RVSo4nYV0v3bTh6G5GhdUgWV1TbmiAKpneUujHwDpXmHFusv3hb2uczRCHczeU2g1fMyud2dNCbc/s320/insects.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My daughter loved the color. She commented that it looked just like outside dirt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We both loved the silky texture and the smell.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEIhNWY5iDESEbadKtl94fNLChc3T1JIzs3OiHRH8J6OxIvy1gz-eJPn0Sdxh2XNL4ee0_9qW_Yu3DidnzdUlLu6B6T-Rc0iTwI1la2bTJKO9adK8bsxVHpO0yTQVeAvXouXo_MRK_qMo/s1600/close+up+glitter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEIhNWY5iDESEbadKtl94fNLChc3T1JIzs3OiHRH8J6OxIvy1gz-eJPn0Sdxh2XNL4ee0_9qW_Yu3DidnzdUlLu6B6T-Rc0iTwI1la2bTJKO9adK8bsxVHpO0yTQVeAvXouXo_MRK_qMo/s320/close+up+glitter.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
Like usual, she added glitter.</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
When we were done we closed up the container to use for the next day.</div>

My daughter called this "Soap Dough" because it smells clean. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0joLesVaZsrQtV2aGi2_VM4H9OrygKrlhLjaNzpHKcD-kwB3n1U-R5NthJLv85Npm_iJGCVmItK344N6VUEOkDKM5g2KloYOP67ZanfRNi2mqDiG-uUlyHTM5Hf0nSa5pKWhviPku3Yw/s1600/ingrediants.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0joLesVaZsrQtV2aGi2_VM4H9OrygKrlhLjaNzpHKcD-kwB3n1U-R5NthJLv85Npm_iJGCVmItK344N6VUEOkDKM5g2KloYOP67ZanfRNi2mqDiG-uUlyHTM5Hf0nSa5pKWhviPku3Yw/s320/ingrediants.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
It is super easy to make and only requires to ingredients- Dish soap and cornstarch. We also added green food coloring. </div>

Slowly stir in the dish soap till you get the right consistency.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It should be slightly moldable.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She enjoyed burying her rocks in her soap dough.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After a little while she decided that it needed glitter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When she was done we put it in a container to save for later in the week. My daughter pointed out that she didn't even need to use soap to wash her hands after playing because she was just playing with soap.</div>

In case you didn't know, Safari has a glow in the dark insect toob (purchase <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Safari-Toob-Glow-Insects-Figure/dp/B004KPRXJM/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1369981966&sr=1-2&keywords=safari+glow+in+the+dark">here</a> on amazon). We have been having a lot of fun playing in the dark with these creepy crawlies. Our favorite thing to do with them is to add them to our neon sand box and turn on the black light.</div>

As you can see the insects glow great under the black light and you do not have to worry about "recharging" them in the light.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids spent a lot of time just burying and digging out their insects.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After a while I gave them a small mirror to use. They enjoyed having the bugs attack their own reflections.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also did a post on using glow in the dark stars and planets under the black light. </div>

I have been trying to come up with fun ways to strengthen My daughter's handwriting skills. This week I pulled out the sand tray. I made a design and then asked her to copy the design I had made.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJMTT_80j-XGqe6AgKAbou0neSqzqaYlcs3imwwzVAUGdePD0sxXQ4cBQMl0L3K4DkTyhJkhIxvn4hCn5H1oHL3mQ_wLeLGhl-FFWyMVtDR7rs_WbdnFE7eSQ5d2RRo13_nizQfReozIQ/s1600/swirls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJMTT_80j-XGqe6AgKAbou0neSqzqaYlcs3imwwzVAUGdePD0sxXQ4cBQMl0L3K4DkTyhJkhIxvn4hCn5H1oHL3mQ_wLeLGhl-FFWyMVtDR7rs_WbdnFE7eSQ5d2RRo13_nizQfReozIQ/s320/swirls.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She really enjoyed making swirls.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3K8DmZA69l1XEHe3u9dw_pp_UpDXwGY4KZAq93nQibdQGiEDAlsLopUqEGi4Gi3n8GGDttvGdSUYcOL_B62OxeR72h4DRah57DU5SdjUGLKUpAEYs2LcbVvwdoJCIviu7m8fbyYLrMmo/s1600/zig+zags.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3K8DmZA69l1XEHe3u9dw_pp_UpDXwGY4KZAq93nQibdQGiEDAlsLopUqEGi4Gi3n8GGDttvGdSUYcOL_B62OxeR72h4DRah57DU5SdjUGLKUpAEYs2LcbVvwdoJCIviu7m8fbyYLrMmo/s320/zig+zags.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She pretended she was drawing a snake and she wanted it to be really "bumpy"</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0DN1Cmxz6sgblZQ4md06-xstIOKmcyCecqgN7TiXC-Xcs27Aj-TNhxfvx8BV0aO2zw97sYf1RT0Py9S729qHNnStEHuA6BBpp-L5BQb9_QGeMVaDrq7jRk8EIec-rzg2jmRe9cSN1AO0/s1600/loops.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0DN1Cmxz6sgblZQ4md06-xstIOKmcyCecqgN7TiXC-Xcs27Aj-TNhxfvx8BV0aO2zw97sYf1RT0Py9S729qHNnStEHuA6BBpp-L5BQb9_QGeMVaDrq7jRk8EIec-rzg2jmRe9cSN1AO0/s320/loops.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see she did not always copy what I did correctly but I always praised her effort. Even though she didn't do it "right" she still gained fine motor skills and confidence which are essential when it comes to good handwriting.</div>

Here is a look at some of the fun we have been having with our water beads and crystals.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicOZLyzkQQzn_OrG1FIvoT_eJvdQiS_ADNRzKI4ZzTX7yvdDq8Jpe1tx9zDLLhpE7tDqJqWWdXHugv6sPEL8izCf3qSrKuqCwvJHWMU61dY9Bqwy_BKskyrj-_Rnnfk70Oq7RG18RrQLw/s1600/Ramp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicOZLyzkQQzn_OrG1FIvoT_eJvdQiS_ADNRzKI4ZzTX7yvdDq8Jpe1tx9zDLLhpE7tDqJqWWdXHugv6sPEL8izCf3qSrKuqCwvJHWMU61dY9Bqwy_BKskyrj-_Rnnfk70Oq7RG18RrQLw/s320/Ramp.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We set up her hot wheels track so that she could roll her water beads down the ramp.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR6W8ym7Upi8H6K9stS76kEFLw8rM7QKJJ-iDNmq0ZIorhk9w5k7T_HsASZFWfJLf5it5nWSKNDw4UXFNBQhW1IWxDNYx3O9h5ORnGBmaio_Tx_DIzpoIbYbXG8pdnCDHOvvY05etIrUo/s1600/Beads+and+Crystals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR6W8ym7Upi8H6K9stS76kEFLw8rM7QKJJ-iDNmq0ZIorhk9w5k7T_HsASZFWfJLf5it5nWSKNDw4UXFNBQhW1IWxDNYx3O9h5ORnGBmaio_Tx_DIzpoIbYbXG8pdnCDHOvvY05etIrUo/s320/Beads+and+Crystals.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She mixed all of her purple water beads in with the crystals she grew (post <a href="http://learningatplay.blogspot.com/2013/03/growing-crystals.html">here</a>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicOZLyzkQQzn_OrG1FIvoT_eJvdQiS_ADNRzKI4ZzTX7yvdDq8Jpe1tx9zDLLhpE7tDqJqWWdXHugv6sPEL8izCf3qSrKuqCwvJHWMU61dY9Bqwy_BKskyrj-_Rnnfk70Oq7RG18RrQLw/s1600/Ramp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqMHSVgPizEWSBBLrfdMxE-uPbiQKZVsV876fj74E5DbB1A7dg24YCQ9iR2Q3iE5P_Zd9PhMwNcbTRWLIDY-5j5C1KsIXcrS6BNQOq7kh4-TMQ1cUJcO7u14tVZYiU6t422EjtcMIHq7g/s1600/Crystals+on+Ramp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqMHSVgPizEWSBBLrfdMxE-uPbiQKZVsV876fj74E5DbB1A7dg24YCQ9iR2Q3iE5P_Zd9PhMwNcbTRWLIDY-5j5C1KsIXcrS6BNQOq7kh4-TMQ1cUJcO7u14tVZYiU6t422EjtcMIHq7g/s320/Crystals+on+Ramp.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She discovered that the flat shape of the crystals was not conducive to rolling down the ramp. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So she started using the crystals as obstacles for her water beads to overcome.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBFebHeLI5fEl_FIJh9PbnzoOp_jgTUU7L6WH0fRjydOpUn0xq5Iaw1HFSpy93QGLr-oNMMhyq3sBvJCj43jczfFTh5uzmpHbR1wmVM5yjD9aPTg6THA1cGXqJ1qQxk1Uz-9GGM27x4OI/s1600/Weighing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBFebHeLI5fEl_FIJh9PbnzoOp_jgTUU7L6WH0fRjydOpUn0xq5Iaw1HFSpy93QGLr-oNMMhyq3sBvJCj43jczfFTh5uzmpHbR1wmVM5yjD9aPTg6THA1cGXqJ1qQxk1Uz-9GGM27x4OI/s320/Weighing.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After a while we pulled out her new balance. We measured different amounts and combinations of water beads and crystals. Luckily, even though some water beads were bigger than others they were pretty close to the same weight. So twenty water beads in each cup came out balanced.</div>

We are having fun practicing reading with our sand tray and black light. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDbDSfWrIdvV85Bxgdi5a0VhWK623f99OawD18KhurvgTjAnU2MWvz5YlZ7EsfWIk1NBkEekyC06TC-5FMYYZvGUIz5t9Ax-efBgbL5eVjaqyPOHFvGHbTLUceqYNrM-Z8RsWR3Dae6wM/s1600/wand+sand+words.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDbDSfWrIdvV85Bxgdi5a0VhWK623f99OawD18KhurvgTjAnU2MWvz5YlZ7EsfWIk1NBkEekyC06TC-5FMYYZvGUIz5t9Ax-efBgbL5eVjaqyPOHFvGHbTLUceqYNrM-Z8RsWR3Dae6wM/s320/wand+sand+words.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This picture didn't turn out to good but it is our white sand tray under the black light. We are practicing sight words.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxWBvLFIgEY0KIe7zPFewKvLwaUaHXU5dZnqEv-aRWOsvSwGuvzSNMcSTy5A2O7ecU3Ap-7XnaOpA2pGC4CxvmnvDQjccjWiXlqMA3F0GYCyhCWMsWz4ZhP1MZOIMt4piytFkkXycI_3o/s1600/glow+sand+writing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxWBvLFIgEY0KIe7zPFewKvLwaUaHXU5dZnqEv-aRWOsvSwGuvzSNMcSTy5A2O7ecU3Ap-7XnaOpA2pGC4CxvmnvDQjccjWiXlqMA3F0GYCyhCWMsWz4ZhP1MZOIMt4piytFkkXycI_3o/s320/glow+sand+writing.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We made a special sand tray just for the black light. We used orange and pink neon sand (from Micheals). I write a word and my daughter sounds it out and then erases it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My plan for this week- Have her write words for me to read. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This will be a great way for her to practice recalling words and spelling.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bonus- She loves playing teacher!</div>

I finally got around to making these fun letter rocks for light table play. All you need are clear rocks and a permanent marker. Write each letter backwards on the flat side of the rock.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCGvhRgnIknB0Lodz7lyvmkrzN_xEsbEPcSYoBx6u4khkD1pcFkoU7LmRgF8gCdbyHYrazL0SEeWInxGyZ3WXtvKtcmpK2fMb8-qrmnPz5cohiJSYQjoNIR8klJck3FY-5WaQiXPB4rvE/s1600/capital+rocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCGvhRgnIknB0Lodz7lyvmkrzN_xEsbEPcSYoBx6u4khkD1pcFkoU7LmRgF8gCdbyHYrazL0SEeWInxGyZ3WXtvKtcmpK2fMb8-qrmnPz5cohiJSYQjoNIR8klJck3FY-5WaQiXPB4rvE/s320/capital+rocks.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made an upper case set and a lower case set. I also made extras of highly used letters. I keep a bag of blank rocks and a sharpie with the set of letter rocks so that we can quickly make more of any letter we need while playing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_6DlWzh98nw3ZpsWVWIpWW_BBzbJm8Iuw7qWgXVkudf7L_ssmJcyKZDnATMyFFMy7aPgRgQYmxya6_P4faBLeUp4Q_VhQ4j2H2zlZUuZWJDle2KUwltGKDD5EHZPnDAuRjUh3iNBLU5M/s1600/letter+rock+sentence.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_6DlWzh98nw3ZpsWVWIpWW_BBzbJm8Iuw7qWgXVkudf7L_ssmJcyKZDnATMyFFMy7aPgRgQYmxya6_P4faBLeUp4Q_VhQ4j2H2zlZUuZWJDle2KUwltGKDD5EHZPnDAuRjUh3iNBLU5M/s320/letter+rock+sentence.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We use the rocks to practice reading, sight words, and spelling.</div>

We love black light play so I keep trying to find new ways to play. Recently I set up a "Glowing Sink". I added highlighter water, glowing water beads, and neon shot glasses and tubes.</div>

But she had fun and it was super fast to set-up and clean-up.</div>

My daughter is so lucky that she has the Daddy she has. He is so much fun, encourages her curiosity, and helps her live out her dreams. I try to be fun and laid back but I often find myself thinking about the amount of clean up that will have to be done before I agree to let her do something she is asking. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For example- Running through a sprinkler in the park. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She really wanted to run through the sprinkler and my first thought was no because we were on our way back to the car and I did not want her to be soaked. Daddy however immediately said yes and just shrugged and smiled at me when I gave him a look. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not only was he willing to let her run through the sprinklers but he was willing to accompany her when she got a little scared about running that far away from us. If it would have just been me and my daughter and I had said "yes you can run through the sprinklers" but she was too scared I am sure that we would have been heading back to the car nice and dry because I would not have been willing to sit in wet jeans for the car ride. Luckily Daddy is willing to sacrifice comfort to bring his little girl's dreams to life (also willing to carry her Tinkerbell backpack). Here are some fun pictures. </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After running through a couple times with Daddy, she started running around by herself. She tried running under the streams, avoiding the streams, and jumping over them. She even tried to closely inspect how the sprinklers work.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What joy my daughter would have missed out on if Daddy would not have been willing to say yes or participate in her adventure. I learn so much by watching my husband interact with our daughter.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I choose an animal and write the name in the sand. Then she sounds it out.</div>

I love using the sand tray on the light table because it allows my daughter to be more active during her reading lessons. I love hands-on reading activities because it is not practical to expect a young child to learn by only sitting at a table and completing workbooks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That being said we do spend time sitting at a table working on lessons during the day but I add a lot of activities and breaks in between the sitting/workbook work. We only sit and do workbook lessons when she wants too. I do not force her to sit at the table and complete a set amount of work. When she is done we are done. That means some days we do no sit down work and other days we might spend a few hours through out the day working at the table. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My goal this year has been to teach her to love learning and find joy in it. I am slowly trying to acclimate her to the idea of sitting and doing quite work for short periods of time just to prepare her for school in a few months (we will be homeschooling so I can still build in a lot of hands-on work but she will be expected to sit still for longer periods once "school" starts).</div>

Here is a look at the fine motor, sensory box I put out recently.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg41qGl7e9JaBHx4qIS0-k8lXWWr9UY9qvtKxQ0w4EbR6E85vgu_UCeyyVLzIQ7PQupE0oPtTQaJESR-pmmALdEo7dcHb6IkufnO519vbfMWDCZOPyVTsTwcGRErwieJXRWwyxbKNkpMtg/s1600/Sponge+Sticks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg41qGl7e9JaBHx4qIS0-k8lXWWr9UY9qvtKxQ0w4EbR6E85vgu_UCeyyVLzIQ7PQupE0oPtTQaJESR-pmmALdEo7dcHb6IkufnO519vbfMWDCZOPyVTsTwcGRErwieJXRWwyxbKNkpMtg/s320/Sponge+Sticks.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I grabbed a bath sponge and her neon stir sticks (from Walmart) and put them in a container. The sticks have a rounded edge so it is a little difficult to poke them in the sponge but she was able to do it. This activity was a great way to strengthen her hands and fingers. It also kept her busy for about 30 minutes.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd8NLbwRrony9R2f8bfUmDtd7Ps_oynv94EDOvdA0Aa6GRpmcJ-KJNnhZ8v9i_qpTWx0wNN_3MhMn9Js0IRoL5-OdrkMa7zlJxyntEkmHLcUQJ0qlL4EiT2dsPHrTyCE6xBsA3ISBtOb4/s1600/Grace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd8NLbwRrony9R2f8bfUmDtd7Ps_oynv94EDOvdA0Aa6GRpmcJ-KJNnhZ8v9i_qpTWx0wNN_3MhMn9Js0IRoL5-OdrkMa7zlJxyntEkmHLcUQJ0qlL4EiT2dsPHrTyCE6xBsA3ISBtOb4/s320/Grace.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She was able to remove and reinsert the sticks a lot of times before the sponge got destroyed.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
My daughter enjoys playing with her glow-in-the-dark stars and planets but they do not glow for very long and she has to "recharge" them a lot. So we tried them with the black light. Problem solved! They glow great and there is no need to take breaks and turn the lights back on to "recharge". </div>

<div align="center">
Here is a picture of the planets and stars randomly spread out on her table. We did put the planets in order but I must of forgot to take a picture. </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
We spent more time talking about planets and solar systems than ever before because we didn't have to take breaks. The planets held her attention longer and she was able to learn more. Wish I would have thought about this when we first started learning about planets.</div>

My son got in on the action as well. He loved the glowing star. He was waving it around so much that I was worried he might poke his eye out. His smiles kept me from taking it away though. He just looked so proud of his star.</div>

This is a fun activity that I came up with to help my daughter practice her reading, counting, and money skills all at the same time. She loves this hands-on activity.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9kVbzO1FzXRRw5a600aHDXYjz0l-bp9w-aZmIjA1c9SWCBMQjg-4jjqgaD0xkY154iKkBzVr11D10fVOkG2TRjt-LToDMXrsA5Vwv_fzZ9LX_v_2UAjujfUnyBvzRQF8tTL1sQUcZY6s/s1600/egg+word.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9kVbzO1FzXRRw5a600aHDXYjz0l-bp9w-aZmIjA1c9SWCBMQjg-4jjqgaD0xkY154iKkBzVr11D10fVOkG2TRjt-LToDMXrsA5Vwv_fzZ9LX_v_2UAjujfUnyBvzRQF8tTL1sQUcZY6s/s320/egg+word.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wrote simple words on the her plastic eggs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She must sound out the word and say it correctly before she can open the egg.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibYuVusyYLpTK3WskHbKX7qeVn_xpJErEaOcfh9gmXrnTrq7SK2GSY8U2ln_TA1yv9awPa6qn0NcfNl98_2fedGPRX-xD90geIPd5ei0dMHe5aGEPdVewJ1cvEbQN7cP8eY1E4uQZtTfU/s1600/pennies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibYuVusyYLpTK3WskHbKX7qeVn_xpJErEaOcfh9gmXrnTrq7SK2GSY8U2ln_TA1yv9awPa6qn0NcfNl98_2fedGPRX-xD90geIPd5ei0dMHe5aGEPdVewJ1cvEbQN7cP8eY1E4uQZtTfU/s320/pennies.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
I filled 10 eggs with 10 pennies each. As she read the words, opened the eggs, and collected her pennies I had her place them on her hundreds chart. She would read each number as she placed a penny on it. When she collected 100 pennies we discussed that 100 pennies made one dollar. We moved her pennies to the side and went to work on the last two eggs.</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6auDUGmicCxHXhLhUcwHCBWGN1IYPrqwcRq8I9KhSWwPgPJycXs8P6hCDpgGY02x9USsIK1SvGOBqoSwNz4681WVLE6rEnHq57V6J0cjpT2uL1JOv1oee_tUotceCloDjfqz_WaG98w0/s1600/dimes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6auDUGmicCxHXhLhUcwHCBWGN1IYPrqwcRq8I9KhSWwPgPJycXs8P6hCDpgGY02x9USsIK1SvGOBqoSwNz4681WVLE6rEnHq57V6J0cjpT2uL1JOv1oee_tUotceCloDjfqz_WaG98w0/s320/dimes.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I filled the last two eggs with five dimes each. We discussed that dimes are worth 10 pennies. As she collected the dimes she placed them on her hundreds chart in the tens spot. When she collected her ten dimes we discussed how they equaled one dollar also. We talked about how it only takes 10 dimes to make one dollar but it takes 100 pennies because they are worth less.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She did such a good job with this game, especially since we were connecting a bunch of fairly new concepts. We played twice and then she asked if she could be done and put her money in her piggy bank. We will definitely be doing this activity again. I have a number of ideas of things to add to this activity- sight words, nickels, quarters, counting without the number chart, etc.</div>

Let's celebrate Earth Day, April 22nd, with a post about making a paper mache globe.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWX9yvSWemvj2ubzJ52b0saMdIn1xpJgeUX4qzzaPNVizy-Q_jjSQVFJYNUscB0y2Y7V4aXnOmDkWpvxm3AIxLCMQD4PsaGw1ME39wKcyrXYtRw_tu5tnsfzM1IvM0-qrDX9Db8S4L4fg/s1600/globe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWX9yvSWemvj2ubzJ52b0saMdIn1xpJgeUX4qzzaPNVizy-Q_jjSQVFJYNUscB0y2Y7V4aXnOmDkWpvxm3AIxLCMQD4PsaGw1ME39wKcyrXYtRw_tu5tnsfzM1IvM0-qrDX9Db8S4L4fg/s320/globe.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Daddy was really excited for this project. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My daughter and husband decided to do the messy part but of course I ended up covered in glue by the end so there are only a few pictures from the beginning of the project. I also forgot to take pictures of the painting part but at least I got a final shot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="center">
Note- If you have never paper mached before just know that it can get messy but it's worth it. </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
<strong>Here is what we did.</strong> </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
1. Blow up balloon. We tried to get it as round as possible</div>
<div align="center">
2. Mix Elmer's glue and water in a bucket. Close to a 1:1 ratio but I didn't measure </div>
<div align="center">
Tip- Do it an a disposable bucket to save yourself some clean up time</div>
<div align="center">
3. Cut newspaper (any kind of paper works) into about 1 inch strips</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="center">
4. Dip a strip of paper into the glue mixture</div>
<div align="center">
5. Coat evenly and removing excess glue by running it through your fingers</div>
<div align="center">

My daughter saw a show on tv that explained how to make wind chimes out of a pan and some spoons. She immediately wanted to try to make her own wind chimes. I tried to get her to use different materials for her chimes but she insisted that they be made out of a thin round pan and small spoons. So we went to the Goodwill where she found a pan she liked. Then we ran to the Dollar Store and picked up a pack of 4 spoons.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Daddy drilled holes in the spoons for us. My daughter helped thread the twine through the holes as I tied the knots (great fine motor practice).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She also helped measure how long the strings needed to be.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She wanted to hang them up outside as soon as we were done. Since it was quite cold that day we did not hang the chimes where we planned too. We just put them on a hook that was already attached to the eves of the house. The hook happened to be just above her slide so we hung them up for a minute and let her ring them as she went down the slide. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Note- As soon as she rang them a couple times the chimes were moved away from the slide for safety reasons. They now hang in a special spot she picked and she uses a stick to ring them when she wants.</div>
